Zayo Bandwidth, a provider of bandwidth infrastructure solutions for carrier, enterprise and government customers, will deploy TDM and Ethernet services to an additional 300 wireless tower sites in the Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley areas of Pennsylvania in support of the current mobile platform and the upcoming transition to 4th generation technologies.

The deployment is aimed at enabling the delivery of high-speed, LTE wireless network services, and also expanding existing network capacity and bandwidth to accommodate new mobile services and applications, the company said.

ITC DeltaCom, a provider of integrated communications services to customers in the southeastern United States, has named Mike DeGraw as Senior Vice President of Wholesale Sales.

DeGraw was previously president and co-owner of Huntington Telecom, an international wholesale voice operator.

DeGraw brings over seventeen years of sales strategy, business development and corporate leadership experience in the telecommunications industry.

DeltaCom has a fibre optic network, and offers a suite of voice and data communications services, including local, long distance, broadband data, internet connectivity, wireless voice and data services, and customer premise equipment.

Alcatel-Lucent and Nordics operator Teliasonera have announced the deployment of the first 100Mbps VDSL2-based access network in Finland, enabling the delivery of a full-blown (high-definition) IPTV service offering across the country.

Teliasonera’s fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) architecture makes use of fibre cables that are trenched from the operator’s central offices to the basement of (apartment) buildings.

From there, the end-users are offered ‘very high-speed broadband applications’ over the existing, in-building copper wires. The architecture is based on Alcatel-Lucent’s 7354 ISAM FTTB Remote Unit – which has been designed for cabinet and multiple dwelling unit (MDU) deployments, the company informed.

Alcatel-Lucent also will provide a range of professional services related to the network roll-out project.

Teliasonera International Carrier has signed a deal to deliver live television broadcasts of a Swedish entertainment show from New York to Sweden – which, the company informed, it will do in 55 milliseconds.

Teliasonera claims to be the first network operator with its own fibre-based media network to offer this service on an international and transatlantic basis.

Reportedly much faster than traditional satellite, the company’s fibre network is understood to have an extensive capacity for broadcast television signals, enabling it to deliver live High Definition programming at very high speeds.

Swedish talk show Sondagsparty (Sunday Party), produced by Metronome/STO-CPH, will be broadcast live from New York and delivered to Kanal 5′s studios in Stockholm. This will be the first time the show has been broadcast from New York, the company added.

Ericsson has informed that it has performed, what it claims to be, the world’s first live demonstration of a VDSL2-based technology achieving data transfer rates of more than 0.5Gbps.

Thw company believes this will allow operators to offer low-cost, high-performance connectivity to an increased range of mobile backhaul customers, enterprise users and residential customers.

The Ericsson demonstration is reported to have achieved data rates of more than 0,5 Gbps over twisted copper pairs using the latest technology for line bonding and crosstalk cancellation for DSL, also known as ‘vectorised’ VDSL2. The technology is suitable for fibre extensions, combining fibre and last-mile copper for backhauling, the company said.

The  company also noted that the new technology makes it possible to use existing copper networks as a backhaul for radio base stations, accelerating future rollout of HSPA and LTE-based high-speed mobile broadband services.

Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom have successfully made a field trial of higher bandwidth optical transmission. Besides others, Ericsson and DT are engaged in the public funded R&D project 100GET, where this test took place.

Ericsson informed that the new technology (delivered in this trial from the Marconi MHL 3000 WDM platform) will accommodate customer’s steady growing broadband services in fixed and mobile broadband networks.

By augmenting capacities on existing fibre networks, the optical transport system helps network operators to scale with incremental Capex and to reduce power consumption per bit and thereby the cost, the company said.

Alcatel-Lucent has been awarded a multi-million Euro contract by the Munich-based regional network operator M-net, to deploy the first extensive fibre access network in Munich.

The comany informed that in the future, additional Bavarian cities will be connected to M-net’s high-speed access network that consists of a mixed fibre-to-the-building (FTTB)/fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture.

Alcatel-Lucent will begin installing in March 2009. Initially, the Munich-based network will support data rates of up to 100 Mbps, thus enabling future services such as IPTV, the company said. In addition to high-speed internet access and telephony, M-net intends to provide cable TV services over its fibre infrastructure as well.

Alcatel-Lucent’s solution includes its GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) access platform – the Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ISAM FTTU – and is complemented by the Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AMS and Alcatel-Lucent 5529 OAD management products.

For in-house usage, a range of the company’s optical network termination (ONT) units and residential gateways will be provided. For the FTTB piece, it will rely on existing copper wiring in buildings, using so-called multi-dwelling unit ONTs to translate the optical signal into VDSL2, Alca Lu added.

Tilgin, a provider of solutions for multiplay and next-generation broadband services, has launched a new FTTX portfolio of multiport Home Gateways at the Fibre-to-the-Home Council’s European Conference in Copenhagen.

Tilgin informed that its new portfolio of Home Gateways are designed for fibre-to-the-home access and include advanced functionality such as multiport with seven LAN ports (7xLAN100BaseT) and 802.11n.

The new HG1550 is a gigabit fibre multi-port gateway with 1 Gig Ethernet WAN and 1 Gig Fiber WAN SFP (slot for fibre), enabling flexible WAN configuration for the client.

Ericsson will deploy a metro aggregation network for Taiwan’s telecom operator, Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), ensuring broadband services, such as IPTV and e-health, for both fixed and mobile access.

Ericsson’s Marconi Optical Multi-Service (OMS) solution is expected to improve capacity and network efficiency, eliminating bottlenecks and improving the quality of bandwidth-intensive services such as IPTV.

The solution is aimed at lowering the transport costs (per bit) by aggregating and grooming traffic in the metro network, with support for both telephony (TDM: Time-Division Multiplexing) and IP (Ethernet) traffic. It also provides a key link between different parts of the network, such as the fixed and wireless backbone network and CHT’s all-IP fibre network, Ericsson informed.

Under the agreement Ericsson will also be responsible for professional services, including network deployment, learning services and support.
